Complex Foot Anatomy

One of the functions of the feet is providing mobility and supporting the weight of the body. The feet are considered to be one of the most complex structures in the body, and are constructed of 26 bones, several muscles, tendons, and ligaments. There are numerous foot conditions which can develop from enduring an injury, or from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. There are several types of bones that are found in each foot. These are referred to as the phalanges, which are the bones in the toes, and the metatarsals that are found within the flat part of the foot. All the foot bones work in synchronized harmony, and most people are unaware until there is foot pain. An injury can occur to parts of the foot other than the bones. A ligament is defined as a strong tissue that connects the bones together. An injured ligament may require a longer recovery time as a result of limited blood flow. If you would like to have additional knowledge about how the feet are constructed, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can provide you with the information you are seeking.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Plaza Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

People who enjoy playing pickleball may find they have developed plantar fasciitis. It is a common injury that can happen from this sport, and implementing preventive methods can help an individual to continue enjoying this activity. People may choose to wear splints during the night, which may help to keep the damaged tendons in a lengthened position. Additionally, it may be helpful to stop playing pickleball temporarily while the foot can heal. This type of foot injury often brings pain and discomfort, and patients may find temporary relief while rolling the affected foot on a frozen water bottle. Blood flow to the injured part of the foot may improve when the foot is frequently elevated, and over-the-counter pain medicine is taken if needed. If you enjoy playing pickleball and have developed plantar fasciitis, it is strongly suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition, which can have you gradually return to participating in this sport.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

If one feels pain in the ball of the foot, it might be from a Morton’s neuroma. This minor, but uncomfortable, condition causes swelling along a nerve in the foot. Why this happens is unclear, but once the swelling occurs, it can pressure surrounding bones and ligaments and cause inflammation and pain. One might feel a burning or numbness from the ball of the foot to the toes, and it can feel as if there is a lump underfoot. A Morton’s neuroma often develops between one foot’s third and fourth toes. It is more common in women, perhaps from wearing high heels or narrow-toed shoes, which can shift bones out of alignment and increase the risk of this affliction. Those who carry extra weight are also more apt to have this condition. If you have pain in the ball of your foot, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

My Toe Hurts

An injury can cause toe pain, making it difficult to complete daily activities. Toe pain may also occur due to an abnormal foot structure or from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Existing medical conditions like hammertoe, bunions, or gout can also play a role. The big toe is affected by gout, and the pinky toe can hurt if a corn develops. Some people endure a broken toe, and buddy taping may be used as an effective healing method. The foot condition known as athlete’s foot can cause the toes and bottom of the foot to itch, which can be uncomfortable. Many diabetic patients have nerve pain, which can develop in the feet. This may lead to getting a foot ulcer, and pain relief is generally sought. An ingrown toenail is defined as a nail that grows into the skin instead of over it, and pus may ooze from it if it becomes infected. If you have toe pain, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is, and offer effective treatment methods.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.
